Matara historically belongs to the area called Ruhana, one of the three kingdoms in Sri Lanka. The temple in the middle of the town was built by ancient kings and now it is a very popular sacred place among the Buddhists in the area. Matara is a busy and prospering commercial place. The main attractions there are the well preserved port, dutch architecture and its interesting street life.
